Watercolour paintings

Landscape paintings in watercolour — some from the mountains far from home, others from much closer to Otley where I live.

Wharfedale in the summer

Watercolour · Wharfedale, Yorkshire

A bit closer to home than my other paintings, this is a scene from near Otley where I live. In June and July the colours in the valley become really vibrant in the sunshine — strong greens varying with golden yellows.

Stac Pollaidh

Watercolour · Assynt, Scottish Highlands

One of the iconic mountains of Assynt in the far north of the Scottish Highlands — one of my favourite places. Stac Pollaidh is a beautiful hill, and I think this is the first of a few paintings of the mountains up there.

Loch Eynort, South Uist

Watercolour · Outer Hebrides

Loch Eynort, on the eastern side of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, is a lovely place. I have stayed there a few times over the years and was back again this April. This painting is the view out the back door of the croft I was staying in.

Fleetwith Pike and Haystacks from Buttermere

Watercolour · Lake District

One of the classic views of the Lakeland fells, from Buttermere. Up there somewhere is a little bothy I had a cup of tea in during one of my first visits to the Lakes when I was 18. I finally revisited it a couple of years ago, while running the Buttermere round.

Artengill Viaduct

Watercolour · Dentdale, Yorkshire Dales

The Artengill Viaduct is in Dentdale in the north-west Yorkshire Dales. The famous Settle–Carlisle line runs over it and a bridleway under it. It’s a great trail to ride, run or walk in a beautiful setting.

Simon's Seat in snow

Watercolour · 2014 · Yorkshire Dales

A scene from mid-December 2014 looking to Simon’s Seat on the eastern edge of the Yorkshire Dales. At home in Otley there was no snow, but from the top of the Otley Chevin I could see the Dales had lots. We headed out to go sledging one Saturday morning and found some near Greenhow Hill — a lovely morning to be in the Dales.

Looking north from Beinn Alligin

Watercolour · 2010 · Torridon, Scottish Highlands

In the north-west Scottish Highlands, Beinn Alligin is one of Torridon’s three classic ridges. This scene looks out over it to the Beinn Eighe ridge, with Slioch and the Fisherfields beyond, a shadow cast across it by the ridge of Liathach. I was up here on a sunny day in November 2010 — just a sprinkling of snow on the hills and superb autumnal light.
